A Return to Happy Days???

For the past several weeks, we have watched the Republican Party have a problem with women’s rights.  We watched them set their sights on “Planned Parenthood”. We almost witnessed Susan Komen withdraw money from Planned Parenthood.  Almost as quickly, Susan Komen changes her mind due to the overwhelming barrage of emails, blogs, news stories by women angered by this.  Then, there was a carfaffle about religious institutions battle of having to provide birth control regardless if the recipient was religious or not.   The president made an amendment that states the insurance company will pay for and handle it.  End of story.  Yet it still continues.  Representative Issa insists this is a religious issue and not a woman’s issue and has a panel of men to have their say.  Five old men were on the panel to voice their opinions and not one woman was allowed to voice hers.  Santorum wants to abolish contraceptives period.  In Virginia, they would like every woman who wants an abortion to have a trans-vaginal ultrasound for no other purpose but to shame and humiliate the woman.

I’m still amazed by these events, it’s like the Republicans would like to return to the 1950’s, the good old days.  What was so wonderful about the 50’s?  I decided to return to the 1950’s to see why the obsession with this perplexing era.

I found that the 50’s was a fabulous era for white men.  It was the era where men were men and women were seen and not heard.  Women voted like their husband.  After WWII, men returned to their jobs and their wives were waiting for them.   Men went to work; put food on the table to support their family and because of that they could not be questioned.  They worked hard so they could play harder. White men were in charge!!!

After WWII, white women were relegated to the home.  The woman’s role was to be a homemaker and raising her family was her first priority.  If she had odd thoughts like working, she was viewed as suspicious.  I mean who wouldn’t want to attend Tupperware parties to talk about the latest fridge or vacuums?

Black people in the 50’s had no voice.  We were still trying to get civil rights never mind the vote.  On December 1, 1955 in Montgomery, Alabama, Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat to a white person despite an order from the bus driver. This event united black people all over to demand civil rights.

Now, I understand the obsession by the Republicans to return to the 1950’s where they were in charge, women had little to say, and blacks had no say.  Unfortunately, it’s 2012 and the chances of us going back in time are NIL!!!  Why would we want to? We are not going back.  Women being able to control their bodies is a right which we have earned and will not give up without a fight. We have an African-American president so needless to say we won’t give up our civil rights.  Sonia Sotomayor is the first Latin justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. Jeremy Lin is the first American player in the NBA to be of Chinese descent.  The Republicans have to be scared of their future because they don’t know where their place will be, the only thing they know is, it will change. Isn’t that progress?

Race & The GOP

Why is it that whenever the Republicans are talking about poor people they are referring to black people?

Two presidential candidates have voiced this same opinion and people are actually believing it.

Santorum says, “I don’t want to make black people’s lives better by giving them somebody else’s money. I want to give them the opportunity to go out and earn the money.”

Gingrich says he would would go to a NAACP convention and tell the African American community why they should demand paychecks instead of food stamps.

These two candidates are touting sweeping racist statements which are insulting and inaccurate.  If we believed these ridiculous statements maybe we can also say all rich people are white.  Now that’s not true because the last time I looked at the 99% alot of them were white.  Santorum and Gingrich are being irresponsible by creating a us vs them attitude by depicting a chasm between white and black people.  They are coaxing white people to get their votes.  Is this working? I guess it is because Santorum is rising and Gingrich is still here.

But what is the real truth of the matter?   We experienced the worst financial crisis since The Depression because of the Republican need for greed. Jobs going overseas so the CEO’s can get more bonuses.  Pay freezes and no health benefits for the workers but not for the CEO’s.  Corporations paying no taxes and wanting even more tax cuts.  Banks not lending money and hoarding it. Many people were displaced and still are.  Times are tough for everyone regardless of race except for the 1% which brings me back to this issue of the non work ethic black.

It’s taken for granted that black people are lazy and make up the majority of welfare recipients and ignorant politicians keep perpetuating this horrible lie.  The reality of the racial statistics of welfare recipients are as follows:  38.8% White, 37.2% Black, 17.8% Hispanic, 2.8% Asian, 3.4%, Other. These statistics are never revealed and kept hidden.  So, who are the Republicans actually talking about? The popular belief that poor people are black is unsustained but in reality being poor is the only thing right now that is colorblind.  Are the Republicans so out of touch with whom poor people really are?

Is it just me or have we begun to care less about people and more about money?  The term “money talks” has meant that we will do anything for it.  For example, the drilling in the Gulf has caused many people to lose their livelihoods all for the sake of oil.  The insurance companies for a long time were denying people health care who had pre-existing conditions but really because the treatments were too expensive and they needed to get their money.  The housing market fell because the higher ups purposely granted people housing they knew they could not afford and the brokers did not fully disclose that rates would increase.  The rich keep getting richer and the poor keep getting poorer.  Yet, we the poor have to keep bailing out our government.  The Republicans keep saying that we want our country back.  But what they are really saying is that because Barack Obama is trying to help the working person there will be less for them, the rich.  There is enough money out there for everyone why should it only be for some people.  Meg Whitman is claiming she did not know her housekeeper was an illegal.  But really, was she providing health care for her?  Did she give her a 1099?  She is a perfect example of taking care of herself and having no regard for humans.  What is happening to us and where are we headed?
